The activists are complaining that the DFO is attempting to censor people and they do it themselves on Youtube.
I’ve had my recent comments deleted from several videos because I dared contradict the claims found in these videos :
“Sport” – Apparently there’s a new trend in activist sites. They decided to claim this commercial hunt is a “sport”. Well, what got my comment deleted was my statement that “sports” are recreational activities and that these are advertised by our tourism authorities. There isn’t any promotional activity in regards to the seal hunt via our tourism authorities. And furthermore the Department of Fisheries did not issue licenses this year because they issued a significantly larger amount last year and most of them weren’t used.
“White coats” – Some people are quite oblivious and they don’t like being corrected, even when the material provided by them contains overwhelming evidence against their statement. I happen to point out that those rows and rows of dead seals they like to show are gray and therefore not white coats. Some of these people are even surprised to hear there’s an actual ban in hunting the fluffy white seals, since 1987.
“Red Lobster Boycott” – They detest the truth in regards to this boycott. Red Lobster clearly states on their site’s FAQ that they don’t import seafood from Newfoundland, that province being the most active in the seal hunt. And why are they still a target ? Because the activists want people to boycott all Canadian seafood, regardless of the fact that only an insignificant amount of it is linked to the people that participate in the seal hunt. I don’t think Americans think too kindly of unjustified attacks against their own retail institutions.
HSUS Seafood Boycott Scam – This has been going on since before I joined Youtube in March 2006. They’re claiming overwhelming support when they’ve been exposed as having misrepresented their support – People were signed on without their consent and the numbers were padded with vegetarians/vegans that don’t eat seafood and businesses that only promote the American seafood industry. They failed to land any large business that actually imported large amount of Canadian seafood so they converted no-one.
“Canada’s reputation” – Where exactly is Canada’s reputation is being hurt by this ? Greenland and Norway import and process seal from Canada’s hunt for export to Europe. These countries along with EU members Sweden and Finland have their own hunts, along with Russia, who also import seal products from Canada. The Chinese import seal products from Russia, Norway, Greenland and Canada and Japan had the same people on their ass over whales and dolphins. The EU also formally claimed that they weren’t against the Canadian hunt via their Ambassador and most Americans don’t care because they’re already got a ban of seal products.
“Censorship by the DFO” – Where ? The observer licences were created years back to keep the shanaigans on the ice to a minimum, for the safety of the sealers, observers and DFO personel, and this year these licences were issued resulting in plenty of footage. The Globe and Mail confirmed recieving their licence this year and IFAW went in prior to receiving theirs yet they weren’t prosecuted or have had their footage confiscated. The 50 meter limit had been a condition of the license for years and that has stopped no-one from getting good footage. There’s no law against filming, nor is there one against the use of optical zoom lenses. These activists clearly haven’t read the Marine Mammal Regulations.
These Youtubers have clearly been trained to assume that everyone that questions the activist claims are sealers or representatives of the industry. Why else would they be so willing to just delete comments or mislabel them as spam (in violation of YouTube’s rules) ?
I’ve actually been accused of being a supporter of cruelty and been labeled a sealer and fisherman just because I simply don’t believe their claims. I don’t need to be any of the above to see this is nothing but a grab for political influence in Canada and the EU – A way for them to solicit donations, a large portion of which ends up in the pockets of the heads of these “non-profit” groups.
Millions of dollars in donations are diverted away from the causes and given to the employees of these organizations and even given to other organizations as donations. The HSUS’ president and vice president, for example, get half a million per year combined in wages and have obtained more via expenses. There are also a few more vice presidents whose wages have yet to be confirmed ! These are all monies that could have been used for whatever causes they’re soliciting donations with.
So, these subjects are not so simply as to enable people to dismiss critics. I just hope these Youtubers will wake up and see the inherent problems in these campaigns. :-/
Youtube Comment Deletion
August 28, 2008Argh. I was posting comments when it did it again. It claimed to have posted but didn’t. So MerryChristmas2You suggested that my cookies could be the problem.
My security software is deleting all of my cookies every 60 minutes, with the exception of those originating from the sites I listed in my trusted site settings. This could be the cause so i’ve added ca.youtube.com to my trusted site settings to see if the problem pops up again. I’ll post the results.
Seriously, if you’re writing short comments it’s fine but loosing larger comments is a pain in the derriere.
